Weekly Record Review - This Week's Artist - Aqua Teen Hunger ForceAqua Teen Hunger Force Have Yourself a Meaty Little Christmas By A.J. Rekdahl Senior Intern Aqua Teen Hunger Force has long been a favorite program on Cartoon Network, and just like their Adult Swim counterparts Dethklok, they have released musical works based off of the characters. In their latest release Have Yourself A Meaty Little Christmas, we find the characters performing their own interpretations of holiday classics. The album starts on humorous note with “Feliz Navidad” which is performed initially with just the distinctive characters voices singing the famous song. Soon the characters begin inserting and changing the lyrics and the song becomes a ridiculous list of tex-mex cuisine. The album continues on in this fashion with humorous asides like “where is the lyric sheet” or the remarkably pertinent hidden track “I’ll Be Home Way After Christmas” about an unemployed man. While the humor is derived from the characters and their quirks made infamous on the show, it cannot be overlooked that the voices are incredibly aggravating and the lyrical content in general being ridiculous. While a great album in spurts here or there, it is difficult to find enjoyment in long sittings. At some point you wish there was at least some hint of the original song, or for that matter a person attempting to sing a humorous line out of character. The production quality is solid. While not spectacular, Meaty Little Christmas does have a refreshing honesty to the sound. This is particularly evident in songs like “Hark! The Herald Angels Rap.” Normally I would close with a listing of suggested tracks, but as I feel most of the humor escaped me I will simply reiterate the lack of long-sitting qualities this album possesses. The songs are humorous, but I do not recommend this as a feature of a Christmas special. Bearing that in mind, a song every now and then over the weeks leading up to the holiday is highly recommended to inject a little jolliness into the season.
