Wilkinson Public Library's One Book, One Canyon

Wilkinson Public Library is pleased to announce this year’s One Book, One Canyon author/book will be Helen Thorpe and The Newcomers. Thorpe will give a talk for the community at the library on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:00 pm.

The Newcomers follows the lives of twenty-two immigrant teenagers throughout the course of the 2015-2016 school year as they land at South High School in Denver, Colorado. These newcomers, from fourteen to nineteen years old, come from nations convulsed by drought or famine or war. Many come directly from refugee camps, after experiencing dire forms of cataclysm. Some arrive alone, having left or lost every other member of their original family.

Free promotional copies of the The Newcomers are available now at the library front desk while supplies last.

Thorpe lives in Denver. She is an award-winning journalist and her work has been published in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and 5280 magazine.

Wilkinson Public Library launched the region’s first community read program- One Book, One Canyon- in 2017 to encourage reading for pleasure and start a conversation.  The 2017 book was The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande.  One Book, One Canyon is made possible by the finical support of Friends of the Library
